MeDirect returns to profitability as balance sheet expands
The MeDirect interim results for 2026 indicate that the banking group returned to profitability during its first reporting period following its acquisition by Banka CREDITAS.
MeDirect also expanded its balance sheet by approximately 9% to €5.8 billion. The result marks an important stage in the bank’s strategy following a period of restructuring, investment and changes in ownership.
Return to profitability
The return to profitability suggests that MeDirect is beginning to benefit from the measures introduced to strengthen its operations and financial position.
During the previous financial year, the group absorbed restructuring costs and reduced its exposure to non-core institutional lending. It also received new capital from Banka CREDITAS following the completion of the acquisition in September 2025.
These changes were intended to support a more sustainable and focused business model.
MeDirect interim results show expansion
Growth in the balance sheet reflects continued activity across the group’s lending, deposit and investment operations.
MeDirect operates in Malta and Belgium, with services covering digital banking, mortgages, business lending and wealth management. The bank has also continued investing in technology, data security and fraud prevention.
Strategy enters a new phase
The latest results suggest that the bank is moving from restructuring towards growth. Its priorities include expanding its customer base, improving digital services and developing its Maltese corporate-banking activities.
However, maintaining profitability will depend on effective cost control, asset quality and the bank’s ability to compete in an increasingly active local banking market.
