HSBC Malta reports €69.8 million profit and announces new dividend
Pre-tax profit falls 15% in first nine months
HSBC Bank Malta plc reported a pre-tax profit of €69.8 million for the first nine months of 2026, down 15% compared with the same period last year.
The decline was mainly due to lower interest income, weaker insurance returns and higher operating costs.
Revenue fell by €7.8 million, or 5%, while operating expenses increased by 8%.
Excluding €9.9 million in notable expenses, adjusted pre-tax profit stood at €79.7 million, down 3%.
Customer deposits increase as lending declines
HSBC reported a €261 million increase in retail and commercial deposits compared with September 2025.
Meanwhile, net customer loans fell by €68 million from December 2025, although new personal lending recorded double-digit growth.
The Bank also recorded a €6.9 million reduction in provisions for potential loan losses. This followed improvements in loan quality and the recovery of an older corporate loan.
HSBC announces December dividend of €0.046 per share
Despite the decline in profits, HSBC’s board approved an interim gross dividend of €0.046 per share, equivalent to €0.0299 net.
Shareholders registered at the close of trading on 6 November 2026 will receive the dividend on 11 December.
The Bank confirmed that it’s capital and liquidity levels remain above regulatory requirements.
Meanwhile, HSBC’s planned transition to a new majority shareholder, CrediaBank, remains subject to regulatory approval.
